FEAR IS THE GREAT INTERRUPTER
Have you experienced Communication Breakdown?
Of course you have. It happens all the time.
(Our world is having a big one right now.)
Hopes. Expectations. Misunderstanding. Frustration. Anxiety.
Urgency to speak. Impatient listening. Opinions stated as facts. Being cut short.
Finger pointing. Eye rolling. "But what I am saying..." Desperate convincing. A need to win.
Exhaustion. Sadness. Hopelessness.
Does this sound familiar?
Our conversations feel stuck.
And we are tired. We don't know what to do.
We need to be shown a new way of communicating.
is our way forward
Fearless Listening Brings Us Together Again
This talk is for people who want to feel positive about the uncertain future. It is for people who want to enjoy humanity again. It is for people who are ready to communicate—by learning a new way of listening. It is for people who want your relationships and communities to work and feel better. In this talk I bring you interactive experiences, vivid scenarios, playful humor, memorable sounds, images, and personal stories. I infuse your community with tools and knowledge to build real and hopeful communication.
the Three Elements of
LISTENING TO OURSELVES
Awareness of Fears. Curiosity about Safety.
Are your ears scaring you? You are not the only one. Everyone has fears. It's nothing to be ashamed of. Conversations can be scary, especially right now. Our ears go on alert to protect us. They listen for danger, sounding sirens and alarms that take the form of mental and physical interruptions. This is part of our nervous system. I show you how to use your ears in a new way, to hear beyond the alarms, to calm down your nervous system. You feel an increase in safety. It's that old adage of putting the oxygen mask on yourself first. You have to attend to your fears first—then you become available to listen.
LISTENING TO OTHERS
Awareness of Choices. Curiosity about Experiences.
What type of listener are you? I describe five fear-based habits that stop us from listening to others. You get to identify which one of these fearful characters sounds like that distracting voice in your head and why. Then I show you how to talk to it with patience, humor, and loving firmness. I help you make non-habitual choices. Choice is an element of safety. The fearful voice quiets down. A new inner voice can be heard—your curious mind. Curiosity is a wonderful antidote to fear. Suddenly other people become genuinely interesting. You don't have to try to listen—you want to listen.
LISTENING TO OURSELVES AND OTHERS
AT THE SAME TIME
Awareness of Possibilities. Curiosity about Connection.
What is good communication? We have good conversations when we let what we hear impact us. This requires us to leave behind competition and the need to win. What is the point of communicating anyway? To win? OR To create opportunities. Build understanding. Face a challenge. Get something done. This only happens when "we" becomes more important than the destructive antagonism of us/them. I teach you how to create a "we" culture. I show you how to have fun with each other by embracing the life-changing theories of Infinite Play. Good communication leads to more good communication. You start to see a hopeful future.
We feel better. We build relationships. We gain hope.
