PERCUSSION
Phylicia Morris’ passion for music began with the playful melodies of the piano at the age of six. As she explored different instruments, the clarinet's smooth voice captured her attention at ten. But it was the pulsating energy of the drumline and keyboard percussion in high school that truly ignited her love for rhythm. Throughout her academic journey at Sacramento State University, she honed her skills, earning dual Bachelor's degrees in Percussion Performance and Music Education. Her talents transcended classrooms as she coached high school drumlines, nurtured young violinists, and contributed to music festivals. Beyond academia, she marched with the prestigious Sacramento Mandarins Drum and Bugle Corps, solidifying her place in the world of percussion. In 2018, Portland beckoned, and she pursued her Master's in Percussion Performance at Portland State University. While mastering her craft, she lent her rhythmic expertise to the Tualatin Valley Symphony and St. Michael's Lutheran Church. Her passion for music education continued as she assisted instrument technicians in Portland Public Schools.
Phylicia's dedication extends beyond performance. Today, she is a beacon for young musicians, sharing her knowledge of music theory at the Portland Youth Philharmonic (PYP). As the organization's Operations Manager, she plays a vital role in nurturing the next generation of music enthusiasts. But her journey doesn't end there. When not shaping young minds, she collaborates with composers and fellow creatives, constantly pushing boundaries and striving to bring more percussive energy into the world. Phylicia's story is one of relentless pursuit, boundless passion, and a heart that beats in perfect rhythm.
